一直以來,入職大公司是不少人志願,始終人工高、福利好,實力雄厚,工作理應較安隱。
但到昨天,作為上市公司的國泰宣佈裁員600人,打工仔才如夢初醒,驚覺每當大公司業經營不善,接踵而來的就是裁員,這幾乎是大-企-業的指定動作。
任公司說過員工有多重要,最後還是要說出[艱難]決定:因要精簡人手或重組架構,達至轉虧為盈,公司逼於無奈裁員 。
英文點講好?
講開福利,即人工以外得到的額外東西,英文可以叫perks或者fringe benefits,例如醫療津貼,穿梭巴士接送、生日假等等。
e.g. High-ranking government officials enjoy the many perks their jobs offer, including housing and car benefits.
聽到裁員真係嚇到標冷汗(broke out in a cold sweat),最慘係英文同中文一樣,有好多關於「炒魷」嘅講法:
- I was laid off.
- I got the sack.
- I got the axe.
- The company slashed 600 jobs.
- The company laid off 600 back-bench staff.(後勤員工)
- The company fired 600 frontline staff.(前線員工)
- The company dismissed 600 staff.
- The company cut 600 staff without providing severance pay.(遣散費)
- The company is about to chop 600 head-office jobs.
And the list goes on……問您死未!
講到盈利同虧損,自不然想到紅色和黑色,中國人認為紅色吉利,但當業績見紅,西方人一定唔多高興,因為 in the red是指錄虧損;in the black先至係好野黎嘅,係盈利嘅意思,一啲都唔黑仔。轉虧為盈可說成 get out of the red / back in the black
e.g. The property boom put our company in the red some time ago. This year, fortunately, we are back in the black.
最後,當你聽到公司講話要精簡人手(downsize)或者重組架構(reshuffle),就知道唔方好野。
e.g. The company has been downsizing due to economic recession.
e.g. A major reshuffle of management results in senior redundancies.
